A first attempt at the beginning of my in-progress Tir na nÓg story. I have since rewritten the beginning to change the style a bit, but I thought I'd post this in any case.

I have heard your peoples' tales of my home. It is paradise, where the leaves never fall from the trees, the flowers never wither or fade. Where nectar-wine flows freely like a slow, broad river, and the lazy afternoons are spent in naught but frivolities. O, the dancing, the singing, the bright young faces, pale and unlined, untouched by time! The soft sounds of love-making and jest between the rolling hills, immortality nestled in the pillowed flesh of the countryside.

It is not so.

There are some truths in the old tales. That river, Danann, strolls bright and clear amidst smooth-pebbled shores, and there are the green lands about him, where we bring the Milesians. Orchards and vineyards, dark rich earth and the fragrance of apple blossoms – this is their welcome. They are met by garlanded maidens with skin so fair, so pale, so white. Each is crowned with snowy lilies, their sea-glass eyes as gay and vibrant as midsummer. My Tír na nÓg, shining pendant of emerald and crystal, land of eternal youth.

If only it were so simple.
